Zara Kitchingman
Counsellor | Child & Adolescent Therapist

My work spans across community, child protection, disability, crisis support, and private practice.

I work from humanistic, strength-based, and attachment frameworks, with a practice that is trauma-informed, person-centred, and neuro-affirming.

I believe each person has the capacity for growth, healing, and meaningful change when provided with safe, supportive, and non-judgemental environments.

I apply an eclectic approach, drawing from a range of evidence-based modalities and tailoring support to individuals developmental needs, strengths, interests and goals.

Central to my work is fostering authentic relationships that enhance well-being, identity, and connection. Through collaboration, I work alongside you to build self-awareness, implement positive change, strengthen your relationships, and move beyond limiting expectations.

This collaboration builds a trusting therapeutic alliance, central to this process and serves as the foundation for personal growth and living a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

Why choose me

IMG_5201_edited_edited.jpg

Choosing a counsellor can be difficult, as the therapeutic relationship is so important to working through personal challenges.

Research has found that practicing a person-centred, empathetic approach during counselling, which provides a safe, accepting relationship between the therapist and client, is key to the process of client self-discovery and actualisation. Zara believes that a strong focus on the cllient-therapist relationship and individual readiness is the basis for all therapetuic work.

How I can support you

My work includes but is not limited to supporting social and emotional development, strengthening caregiver-child relationships through attuned and connection-based parenting based on neurodevelopmental and attachment science, overcoming intergenerational patterns and maladaptive nervous-system responses, and navigating challenges related to stress, trauma, grief, neurodiversity, identity, and life transitions.

Inner Play acknowledges the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia of which we live and work, and recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture.

I pay deep respect to their elders past, present and emerging, and recognise those whose ongoing effort to protect and promote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures will leave a lasting legacy for future Elders and leaders.
